Scripture: Genesis 15:1-6
Did you know that the word “BELIEVE” doesn’t mean what you think it means?
The English language is the only one of the European-based languages where “believing” something is primarily an intellectual matter.
In every other language, belief involves the connection of head and heart. It is not possible to say that one believes something to be true without some degree of emotional connection to that truth. In the Western world, we have made the life of faith a predominantly intellectual exercise. We focus on the teaching of doctrine as information to be learned…and we call that discipleship.
Righteousness was not credited to Abraham in today’s Scripture because he heard a good argument and chose to believe it to be true. Abraham received a promise from a loving God, and being overwhelmed by that love, Abraham gave his heart to that God.
Fortunately, this is not your doing. Only God, through the working of the Spirit, can grow your neck and change your heart. So if the posture of your faith is mostly intellectual, confess your unbelieving heart to God, and invite Him to grow your neck.
This is what it means to truly believe God, and God will credit it to you as righteousness.
